Character Overview

Luke was a vigilante who hunted EVOs in partnership with his wife, in a attempt to avenge the death of their son, Dennis, who was killed at Odessa. In the course of the series, however, Luke begins to feel remorse for his actions and wants to stop their vendetta. Almost a year after he became a vigilante, Luke suddenly evolves, himself, and is revealed as an EVO with Heliokinesis. The evolution surprised and frightened him, and strengthened his need to end their vigilantism. When he revealed his new powers to his wife, she held a gun to his head and showed horror at the change. He invited her to pull the trigger if it would make her feel better, instead, she walked away from him, abandoning him.

Heroes Reborn

"Brave New World (Reborn)" June 13th, Odessa Texas, Unity Summit, Luke and his wife, Joanne, are at the summit with their son, Dennis, then the explosion happened. Dennis was missing, and they searched frantically for him. When he was finally found, he was dead, devastating his parents.

One year later, Luke has infiltrated a meeting of EVOs, in Chicago, Illinois. He listens to them speak, and then tells them the story of how he lost his son. He says he knows that they cannot help what they are, but they are unnatural and untrustworthy. Another EVO comes busting in through the door, with Joanne right behind him, both Luke and Joanne pull out their guns and kill all the EVOs in the room, and then sets the building on fire, "for Dennis."

Luke tells Joanne that one person walked out before her arrival, and they track him to Moe's ice cream shop in Carbondale, where they wait to see if Tommy shows up. Luke sits at the table after Joanne leaves for the rest room, and then Tommy spots him and sits down to ask how he escaped the fire. Joanne then returns and shows Tommy her gun and they force him out the back, but when his girlfriend spots them, Tommy teleports both of the vigilantes away from them.

In a mysterious room with no window or exit, Luke and Joanne find themselves trapped, she fires a shot at the wall and the bullet ricochets, having zero effect on the wall. Luke forces her to stop before she kills them both. Luke is angry at her, saying they wouldn't even be there if she had listened to him and went after El Vengador instead of Tommy. After an intensive search of their prison, Luke begins to wonder why there isn't a light switch, then he realizes that its because if the lights go out then he might see something he shouldn't, so he shot out the lights and finds an observation window. He breaks the window and he and Joanne escape. They then find a man eating a doughnut in the hall, and force him to lead them to an exit, but their path leads them to a room full of technicians and security, Joanne begins shooting. Luke, frustrated with her, cannot stop her, so joins her to protect her from the return fire. Once outside they steal Noah Bennet's car.

In "Under the Mask" Luke and Joanne discover files of EVOs in Noah Bennet's car, delighting Joanne who calls it their hit list. Luke seems unhappy with the find, and presses a button to turn off the radio, it somehow shorts out the car, so they begin to walk. They stop at a diner and he wonders out loud why they are still hunting EVOs. Luke says that he wants to go west to LA to see the ocean because he and his son loved the water, then his knife begins to heat up. Freaked, Luke drops it and it cools instantly. He complains of a headache, and Joanne drives them to a hotel. As she checks them in, he stumbles to the side of the building a begins to glow, Luke appears to be a newly evolved heliokinetic.

In "The Needs of the Many" he watches as Joanne knocks on a mans door and shoots him between the eyes when he answers. Luke tells Joanne that the man had a family and a life, he feels guilty for what they had just done. Later, in his hotel room, Luke continues to manifest powers, he tells Joanne that they should stop hunting EVOs, he wants to be normal again. Joanne disagrees and goes hunting without him. Alone, Luke puts his hand in the sunlight and it begins to glow, it also becomes very hot, hot enough to boil a glass of water, Luke freaks and throws to glass against the wall in a panic. He then opens the curtains to a sky that has changed.

When he and his wife later drive off, she begins talking about their first EVO kill together. Luke decides he must come clean, and tells her that they are lost, that he must stop, and then Luke sets her hit list with the EVO names on fire using only his hand and his new powers. Joanne slams to a stop, and points her gun at him but she can't quite bring herself to kill him. She walks off, never once looking back.

In "The Lion's Den", Luke returns to his house in Rochester, New York to find that a large pile of mail has cluttered the front door, suggesting that neither he nor Joanne have been there in months. He searches the house for Joanne but she isn't there. Luke enters his son's room and begins to cry. He watches old videos of him with his son, a bitter sweet memory, before finally calling his former receptionist, Marcy, and tells her that he needs to see his partner, Don. Don shows up at Luke's door, and Luke tells him he wants to sell his half of their dental practice to him. After he and Don settle things, he returns to Dennis' room where he looks at a picture of the family they once were, and then almost without thinking about it, he sets the room on fire. He drops his wedding ring into the flames, grabs a model sailboat he and Dennis made, and leaves the house to burn.

In "Game Over", Luke calls Joanne from a marina, he informs her that the house is gone, tells her goodbye, and he throws his phone in the lake. He is approached by a marina salesmen and Luke shows him the model boat and says he wants one just like it. When Luke later returns to the marina from and errand, he comes around the corner and catches Malina using her powers. He then tries to help her use the vending machine and burns himself with his own power, they share a look, and he then walks away. On the new boat, Luke straps on a backpack full of bricks, then he jumps into the water. Malina sees him and she uses her ability to save him. Malina wants to know why he would try to end his own life, he replies that he lost his purpose, and was looking for a sign. Malina tells him that she's looking for something, too, she shows him a picture of Tommy Clark, he recognizes the boy, and tells Malina that he last saw Tommy in Illinois. They both believe they have their signs.

In "June 13th - Part One", in a flashback, Luke and Joanne are in an Odessa hotel room with their son, Dennis, he has an illness, Solar Urticaria, an allergy to sunlight which causes a severe rash or even anaphylactic shock when he is exposed to the sun. He and Joanne want to go to the Summit in hopes that one of the EVOs can help Dennis. When they arrive at the Odessa Unity Summit, Luke has to reassure Joanne that this is a good idea. The family is having a good time, but Luke loses sight of Dennis, then the sky gets dark, and the building explodes. The parents shout for Dennis, panicked. Luke searches the rubble for his son, but he finds the Ice Man trapped, so he helps him out, and asks if he's seen Dennis, he hasn't, and Luke still has no idea where Dennis is.

In "June 13th - Part Two", Luke and Joanne put Dennis' picture on a board at the Summit for the people that are still missing, there's a side for EVO's and a side for normals. Luke puts his son's picture on the 'normal' side. He and Joanne are not allowed to search for themselves, and must wait to see if Dennis turns up. Eventually, workers brings in his body, Dennis is dead, they both are gutted and begin to cry.

Later, Luke and Joanne return to their hotel room when the Ice Man knocks on their door, he wants to thank Luke for saving him. Joanne becomes furious because her husband saved an EVO and not her son. Joanne calls the EVO "one of them" and a "freak", Luke says that he had to help. Joanne attacks the man, but he fights back knocking her down. Luke snaps and attacks the man who then grabs Luke by his throat and begins to freeze him. Joanne violently and repeatedly stabs the man with scissors. He collapses and bleeds to death on the floor as she smiles, even as Luke recovers from his near death experience.

In "Sundae, Bloody Sundae", Luke and Malina are headed to Carbondale, Illinois, in search for Tommy Clark. He and Malina stop at a diner where Malina asks him what the purpose he lost was, but he doesn't answer. He then shows Malina his ability by toasting his sandwich into a charcoal briquet, and she smiles. Once back on the road, Malina tells him about the times she had with her grandmother, then he tell her about his son, Dennis, and they share some gummy candy. When they arrive at Moe's Ice Cream Shop, they hear a gunshot, he tells Malina to stay in the car, and walks in to the shop just as Joanne is about to kill Emily. His hands start to glow then he tells Joanne to stop, then sets the table on fire as a warning. She demands that he admit that killing EVOs made it better, but he tells her that killing EVOs didn't make him feel better, he only did it for her. Joanne then attempts to shoot Emily and Luke tries to stop her, loosing fire from his hands. The next thing they know, Luke's fire has been redirected, and hits the ice cream and it explodes. Joanne runs out the shop and through an ally Luke chasing behind her but he loses her. Tommy has been through and rescues Emily.

In "11:53 to Odessa", Luke approaches Noah Bennet and Malina, he tells them that he's a EVO and that Malina saved his life. He feels he owes her, but Noah rejects his offer and they walk away. Luke won't quit, however, and follows Noah and Malina while they go to find Tommy Clark. When they stop at a gas station, they notice Luke pull in behind them, Noah confronts him and Luke confesses his sins to Noah. Everything that's happened since Dennis dying, including hunting EVOs, and trying to kill Tommy. Then he points out that Noah knows the kind of pain he's been through, that he showed some himself. Noah gets angry and walks away. Luke continues to follow Noah and Malina when they leave. They hit traffic because of an approaching monster storm. Malina is able to stop it, but by that time Noah has disappeared. Bystanders saw her power but instead of thanks, she is blamed for bringing the storm not calming it, shots are fired and Luke comes to her rescue. He demonstrates his own power to warn off the crowd and then gets her to safety.

In "Send in the Clones", Luke and Malina pull into a box-store to buy supplies and weapons. Malina studies Noah Bennet's broken glasses, all that they could find of him. Luke offers to go back and look for Noah but Malina wants to continue their mission. Malina believes that Erica Kravid took both Noah and Tommy. Luke and Malina plan on going to Midian, Colorado to get Tommmy and then going to Odessa to finish the mission.

Once they get back on the road, Prime cuts Luke and Malina off at a intersection. Malina and Luke bail, and run into a nearby corn field. Prime, Phoebe, and Quentin get out the car and follow. Phoebe suppresses everyone's power and Malina cannot cover them. When Luke next sees Malina, she is wrapped in Phoebe's power, so he knocks Phoebe out, and burns down the nearby clone with his power. Luke lets Quentin live, and he recognizes Luke as the man from Odessa when Joanne shot him. Luke threatens to kill Quentin if he doesn't put the gun down, Quentin decides to comply, and he drops the gun, then Malina put the Power Negation Device in Phoebe's nose. Luke takes Quentin and Phoebe to a barn, where he studies Phoebe with obvious hatred, he confronts her about killing everyone at the Odessa Unity Summit, including his son, then forces them to tell where Tommy is. Luke wants to kill Phoebe for what she did, but Malina stands in front of his Glock, not wanting him to have further regrets, so they take Phoebe and Quentin with them to Odessa, Texas.

In "Company Woman", on the radio it's stated that the local residents are being evacuated to Union Wells High School, Quentin mentions that this is Claire Bennet's old school. Luke noticed that people are being stopped by the army, he soon realizes that they are looking for Malina. He knows that he can't get passed them, so he comes up with a idea to bring Tommy to them. He, Malina, Quentin, and Phoebe go to Primatech Paper, he makes Quentin and Phoebe get out the car and he leads them into the woods. Malina tries to stop him, realizing what he plans, but he is determined, and she gets back in the car. In the woods, Phoebe says she doesn't think he'll kill them, and he responds that she doesn't know him very well. She then takes off, and Luke levels his gun at her, Quentin tackles him, he loses his gun but continues to go after Phoebe but he loses her, to his great frustration.

Quentin runs up with his gun pointed at Luke, but instead of shooting him, he gives the gun back. Luke tells him that if he helps, there's no going back to his sister. Quentin agrees, and says Phoebe is not his sister any more. Luke, Quentin, and Malina arrive at Claire's old school, they enter the gym, and Luke tells them his plan is for Malina to put on a show for the news crew in order to get their attention and to get Tommy there. Shortly after executing his plan, Joanne enters the gym, he spots her and tells them its time to leave, but Joanne has already seen them. Joanne shoots at Malina but an invisible Farah saves her. Horrified, Luke responds instantly and burns Joanne to the ground.

Quentin goes to check on Malina but she isn't shot, Farah stood in front of her while she was invisible, which gave the appearance of Malia being shot. Luke shakes himself out of the horror of what just occurred and tells Carlos Gutierrez to take Farah to the hospital.

In "Project Reborn", Luke, Malina, and Quentin reach Gateway and find it abandoned. Luke realizes that everyone has been transported to the future and they see the first wave of the H.E.L.E. approaching. Though Malina wants to stop it, Luke reminds her that the prophecy shows that she and her brother face the second wave. Luke tells Malina he can never make up for what he's done, but he believes there was a reason Malina saved his life, and this is his chance to atone. As Quentin keeps Malina inside, Luke absorbs energy from the solar flare and flies himself into it. Once inside the flare, Luke flares out of existence, dissipating the solar flare harmlessly at the cost of his own life.

Powers

  • Heliokinesis: Luke is able to radiate heat, light, and small electromagnetic sparks. Discovering his ability late in life, Luke doesn't have much control over it, and often it manifests at inopportune times. When attempting to avoid using this ability, he wears layers of clothing to limit his exposure to the sun, and also shuts himself indoors with the curtains drawn, suggesting that Luke's ability may require the absorption of sunlight in order to be used, or may simply manifest more prominently when he is exposed to sunlight. The latter may be the case, as Joanne notes that his head "feels like the surface of the sun" even when he is shut in a darkened room. He eventually gains control over the ability, but tells Malina that it requires the sun to work properly.
    • Flight: Drawing upon the energy from the first solar flare of the H.E.L.E., Luke displays the ability to fly or at least levitate though it causes him pain. He was also able to harmlessly dissipate the flare by flying himself inside it and absorbing and dissipating the energy he collected from the flare, killing himself in the process.
